Vehicle Thief Thwarted by Stop Sticks: In South Dakota, a man engaged in a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle.  The chase lasted three counties until it finally came to an end with the deployment of Stop Sticks.

A Chase Begins

            In Aurora County South Dakota, a driver comitted a gas drive-off.  A gas drive-off occurs when a Jeep Wrangler drove away from a gas station with the nozzle still in the tank.  When the South Dakota Highway Patrol spotted the vehicle, they realized that the Wrangler matched the description of a stolen vehicle.  The authorities attempted to apprehend the driver, and he sped off which began a pursuit with the authorities.

The Chase

            The Jeep Wrangler refused to stop for the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and engaged in a high-speed pursuit.  The vehicle reached speeds of 95 mph, and the chase continued into Davison County.  Eventually, the chase reached its third county as the vehicle and authorities entered Parkston.  Once the vehicle entered on the South Dakota Highway 44, patrol officers successfully deployed Stop Sticks on the vehicle, bringing the vehicle to a halt.  This finally concluded the chase that went through multiple counties.

Aftermath

            Once the chase ended, officers searched the vehicle and found a lot of incriminating material.  The vehicle contained: a digital scale with methamphetamine residue, marijuana, several glass pipes with burnt marijuana residue, and a marijuana joint.  Officers also found: 110 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition with five pistol magazines, and three checks made out to a Sioux Falls business.  The vehicle was declared stolen, and the suspect was arrested.  The suspect’s name is Darious Johnson and was on parole for past convictions including stolen vehicles, burglary, and escape.  Johnson has been sentenced to ten years in state prison.
