Stop Sticks Added to Idaho State Police: Recently, the Idaho State Police has been able to improve the equipment in the department, including new Ford Mustangs and Stop Sticks.

New Vehicles

            They has received nine Ford Mustangs as patrol cars.  Because of this, they will be able to divide it between six different districts, with District 3 getting three cars.  The Ford Mustangs will be replacing the Dodge Chargers they had in the past.  Lieutenant Todd Orr also says that they will be receiving more Ford interceptor SUVs as well.  After this, they will move to Dodge Durrangos and keep those cars for the foreseeable future.

The Police has also added Yamaha FJR motorcycles in the Pocatello area where motorcycles are more convenient for troopers.  There will also be new technology inside all the patrol vehicles.  New axon camera systems are now in vehicles for the Idaho State Police.  The new systems are a cloud based system, which will allow less people to have to be in the office for uploads.

Stop Sticks

            The State Police has also switched tire deflation devices.  They have gone from stinger spike system to Stop Stick.  When asked about it Lieutenant Orr replied: “It’s just a safer tire deflation device.  It’s a lot safer for everybody, particularly for the officers that are deploying, but also for the public, because they’re encased and you’re not going to lose spikes and stuff out on the roadways and things like that.”  The Stop Sticks have been described as much safer for the troopers to deploy.

“One of the biggest things with those stop sticks is the cord for the reel, the rope if you will, is a lot longer, so our troopers can be a lot farther away from traffic while they do deploy them and that’s our biggest thing. We don’t want our troopers out there by the side of the road deploying tire deflation devices in an unsafe location.”

Idaho State Police has realized enhancements in technology and decided to invest in it.  With adding newer vehicles, better cameras, and Stop Sticks will give officers a better chance to keep the roads safer because of it.
