Semi-trucks are often the largest vehicles on American roads and highways. As such, truckers should be setting the example for motorists nationwide. However, this trucker decided the right move was to lead multiple police agencies on a high-speed chase after refusing to vacate an emergency lane in Georgia.
Police in Georgia are likely glad to be done with an ordeal involving a massive and potentially dangerous semi-truck. Law enforcement in Emerson, Georgia pulled up behind a stationary truck on a highway. According to police, the truck was parked in an emergency lane adjacent to a highway ramp.
Fox 5 Atlanta reports that the trucker ignored warnings from police to move the vehicle from its illegal parking spot. Law enforcement returned to the spot later to discover the trucker had not moved his rig. This time, however, the trucker locked himself in the stationary truck. He then put the rig in reverse, backing into a police car on the highway.
As you might imagine, this maneuver initiated a police pursuit of the semi-truck and its obstinate operator. While a pursuit of a giant vehicle might seem silly, a semi-truck can be a uniquely dangerous safety concern for public roads. After all, these rigs can weigh nearly 80,000 lbs and hit 75 mph. That’s a lot of destructive force.
An SUV stolen in New Hampshire led police on a chase at high speeds through Massachusetts Monday morning before the driver eventually surrendered.
The black Mercedes traveled on highways at upwards of 90 mph, speeds so fast that police held off pursuing the vehicle for long stretches so as not to escalate the situation.
At one point, the SUV sped past a gas station where a couple was actually watching the whole thing unfold on a livestream from our news helicopter, Sky Ranger.
“We were standing, pumping gas. I was like, ‘Babe, they are going to drive right by us,’ and literally in that split second he drove right by,” Briana Weir said.
Gas station surveillance footage showed more than half a dozen Massachusetts State Police cruisers driving after the SUV. Another bystander said he thought the SUV hit at least 110 mph.
Massachusetts State Police said they spotted the Mercedes, reported stolen by police in Derry, New Hampshire, traveling south on Interstate 93 in Methuen shortly before 10 a.m. They began chasing the vehicle, and kept the pursuit going on Interstate 495 south and Route 2.
Sky Ranger located the vehicle on Interstate 190 south in Sterling.
State police said the chase continued at speeds as high as 90 mph, and they ultimately decided to terminate their pursuit for safety reasons and used the Mercedes’ built-in GPS to track the vehicle instead.
BLANCHESTER, Ohio — A high-speed chase that began in Blanchester spanned four counties Thursday afternoon until authorities stopped the vehicle in Highland County, resulting in the arrest of two individuals with warrants.
Just before 1 p.m., a Blanchester Police Department (BPD) officer observed a male driving a vehicle, knowing that the male had felony warrants for his arrest, as well as a suspended license, according to BPD Chief Robert Houghton. Upon attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the male reportedly fled at a high rate of speed with the officer pursuing.
The pursuit went into four counties, at times reaching speeds of 110 mph, crossing from Clinton County, to Clermont, Brown, and Highland counties. The pursuit ended in Highland County on State Route 138 near Tolle Road after stop sticks were deployed, causing the driver to stop before striking them.
Taken into custody were Shawn Larkin, 35, of Blanchester, and Courtney Ritze, 34, at large.
Larkin was arrested for his warrant — a probation violation out of Clinton County Common Pleas Court on an original charge of aggravated possession of drugs — as well as additional charges of driving under suspension and felony fleeing and eluding.
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Horry County police are currently searching for a suspect who ran away after a car chase down Highway 501.
HCPD said the chase began around 6:30 p.m. along Highway 378 and onto Highway 501. The vehicle was reported stolen and when police attempted to stop the driver they refused to stop, according to police.
The pursuit stopped near Carolina Forest Boulevard when police deployed stop sticks and the suspect ran away.
HCPD said officers are continuing to search for the suspect but there is no risk to the community.
WARREN COUNTY, INDIANA, Ind. — A Tennessee man is in custody after a police chase near Fowler in Benton County, northwest of Lafayette.
Indiana State Police say a 2008 Ford Focus passed a trooper around 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25. near Brisco, in Warren County. When the trooper tried to pull the car over, police say the driver, Jawan Lawrence, kept going.
Police say they deployed stop sticks on US-41 near State Road 18, near Fowler. Lawrence allegedly tried to avoid the sticks by driving through the median, but the Ford Focus got stuck.
Police say Lawrence got out of the car and tried to run away but was quickly captured by police. He had left a woman and child in the car when he allegedly ran away. Both the woman and child were released by police. Neither appears to have suffered serious injuries.
Police say they found a gun on the man that had a “Glock switch,” which turns a semi-automatic handgun into an automatic weapon. Indiana lawmakers banned the switches in 2023.
Lawrence is charged with possession of a machine gun without a license, neglect of a dependent, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and reckless driving.
He was also wanted on a warrant for disorderly conduct out of Lake County.
Duke A. Yates, 36, of Independence, Missouri, pleaded guilty in federal court to committing two armed robberies and illegally possessing a firearm after leading police on a high-speed chase. The plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Roseann A. Ketchmark.
Yates admitted to two counts of robbery and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. On December 25, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Yates robbed a Quik Trip and a Walgreens in Independence at gunpoint within 10 minutes of each other. He stole between $500 and $700 in cash along with a dozen packs of cigarettes.
An officer spotted Yates driving a white Ford F350 pickup truck with a missing headlight, matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle, on U.S. 40 Highway near Blue Ridge Cutoff. When the officer initiated a stop, Yates fled, turning off his lights and accelerating to speeds over 100 miles per hour.
During the pursuit, Yates ignored stop signs, drove over medians, and endangered other motorists by driving in the wrong direction on 23rd Street. He veered toward a marked police vehicle attempting to deploy stop sticks before losing control of the truck near 24911 E. Truman Road. The truck went off-road, colliding with a power pole and breaking it at its base. Yates then fled on foot and resisted arrest before officers apprehended him.
Laramie County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two women after one of them managed to bypass a safety feature on a patrol vehicle and steal it, the agency reported Thursday.
At about 5:13 p.m. Wednesday, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that someone had stolen a white Ford F-250 truck from the 800 block of South Greeley Highway in Cheyenne.
Witnesses believed one person, later identified as Mandy Miller, had stolen the vehicle, says a statement LCSO reported Thursday to its Facebook page.
Deputies tracked the truck using its own internal tracking device to the Horse Creek Road area off Interstate 25 and made contact with the driver, later identified as Tianna Quin. Then she led them on a chase into the Scenic Ridge Drive area, the statement says.
There, the F-250’s rear tire blew out and it stopped, says the statement.
That’s when Quin got out of the truck and fled toward a home on foot.
Deputies worried that if she made it to the home, “she may commit additional crimes,” the report says.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man accused of fleeing from police on Saturday, November 16th.
Tyrees Cole, 32, of Chicago was charged with Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding Police. Police officials say the pursuit started on Interstate 55 at mile marker 225 and ended at the Dwight exit after spike strips were used to stop the vehicle.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested three people accused of stealing Stanley cups from a business and leading deputies on a chase.
According to Sheriff Jason Ard, deputies responded to a call of two women shoplifting at an area business.
Ard said the two women were accused of stealing Stanley cups and trying to get into a getaway car with a man.
According to Sheriff Ard, a detective approached the car when the two women were trying to enter it.
The detective ordered the driver to stop the car, but the man is accused of hitting the detective while trying to speed out of the parking lot, according to Ard.
Deputies pursued the car to Interstate 12 near Tangipahoa Parish.
The driver is accused of speeding and driving recklessly before hitting spike strips.
Deputies set up a perimeter to deploy spike strips. Before reaching the blockade, Williams drove off the road, abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot.
Deputies pursued him down a long driveway, during which Williams shot and seriously injured K9 Obie with a shotgun. A gunfire exchange followed, leaving both Williams and the K9 injured.
A deputy who is also an EMT provided medical care to Williams, who was flown to a Fresno hospital for treatment.
He is expected to recover and will face charges including probation violations, felon in possession of ammunition, and felony assault with a deadly weapon, along with new charges stemming from Wednesday’s incident, authorities said.
K9 Obie was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic where X-rays revealed his body was full of shotgun pellets. While the pellets will remain in his body, Obie is expected to recover after an extensive rehabilitation process, though he will remain hospitalized for several days.
