Stop Stick® Helps Save 17-Year-Old from Reckless Suspects in Stolen Vehicle

We’re proud to recognize the outstanding actions of Deputy J. Russell and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office. Their expert deployment of a Stop Stick® resulted in the safe and swift capture of three individuals in a stolen vehicle who were refusing to let a 17-year-old girl go.

A Coordinated, Life-Saving Pursuit

In the early morning hours of July 17, Baton Rouge Police received a frantic call from a mother. Her daughter was trapped in a stolen car with three individuals who would not let her out. Thanks to the mother’s quick thinking, she was tracking her daughter’s phone and relaying the location to officers.

Once officers located the stolen Honda Accord, they attempted a traffic stop, but the suspects sped off, hitting speeds over 100 MPH. The reckless police pursuit continued onto city roads where the suspect’s erratic driving put the public and the young girl at extreme risk.

Strategic Deployment and a Safe Recovery

As the chase entered West Feliciana Parish, Deputy Russell stepped in to assist. He deployed a Stop Stick ahead of the pursuit, catching the driver’s attention off guard. The stolen vehicle struck the device, successfully flattening all four tires and bringing the chase to a halt.

Officers quickly apprehended the three individuals inside the vehicle and were able to safely recover the young girl, reuniting her with her mother. After the arrest, officers learned that the suspects had been driving erratically to prevent the girl from escaping. They are now facing charges of aggravated flight from an officer, simple kidnapping, and false imprisonment.

We commend Deputy Russell for his decisive deployment. His effective use of the tire deflation device brought a quick and safe end to a lengthy pursuit, preventing injury to the vehicle’s occupants and the public. This incident is a powerful testament to how a single tool can be used to end a dangerous situation and help law enforcement bring justice to the most vulnerable.

Stop Stick® Hit of the Month Nominee: High-Tech Pursuit Ends with Stolen U-Haul Stop

This month, we’re proud to recognize a precision deployment that leveraged modern technology to bring a dangerous pursuit to a safe end.

We are honored to name Captain J. Samples of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office as one of our Stop Stick® Hit of the Month Nominees for July. His deployment on July 1st was key to the safe termination of a pursuit involving a stolen U-Haul truck that was being tracked by a StarChase GPS device.

A Coordinated, Safe Intervention

The incident began when Moraine Police responded to a stolen U-Haul truck call. The suspect had just carjacked two individuals, taking the truck with the victims still inside. Officers quickly located the vehicle, and when they attempted a traffic stop, the suspect rammed a police cruiser and fled. Moraine Police successfully affixed a StarChase GPS tracking device to the U-Haul, allowing them to back off and track the vehicle from a safe distance.

The suspect continued their attempt to evade law enforcement, even driving through a closed highway construction site on I-75. In a coordinated effort to deescalate the situation, Moraine Police provided the exact location data to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. This precise information allowed Captain Samples to position himself at the optimal location for a Stop Stick deployment.

 

Flawless Deployment and a Safe End

Captain Samples arrived at his designated location on I-75, retrieved his Stop Stick, and deployed it ahead of the oncoming U-Haul. He successfully flattened the truck’s two left-side tires.

With the truck’s tires now deflated, the suspect’s options quickly narrowed. The driver eventually ditched the truck in a wooded area and fled on foot. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the two individuals believed to be the carjacking victims were actually suspects with outstanding arrest warrants. They were taken into custody without further incident, and the driver was apprehended at a later date.

This incident is a powerful example of how law enforcement agencies can work together and use tools like StarChase and Stop Stick to safely end a police pursuit. We commend Captain Samples and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for their dedication to protecting the community and ending a high-risk situation before it could escalate.

Orchard Park Police Thwart Teen Break-in Spree with Stop Stick®

Captain Sheppard proved to be more than the suspects could handle. We are honored to name Captain Sheppard as a runner-up for our Stop Stick® Hit of the Month award.

A Coordinated, Safe Intervention

The incident began in the early morning of July 16, when 911 dispatch received multiple calls about a suspicious grey Jeep driving slowly through a quiet residential area. Callers reported seeing masked individuals exiting the vehicle and approaching driveways.

Orchard Park officers quickly located a vehicle matching the description and confirmed that it had been stolen from Amherst, New York. When an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled, initiating a police pursuit.

Anticipating the suspect’s escape route, Captain Sheppard had already positioned himself ahead of the chase. He strategically deployed a Stop Stick across the road and maintained communication with the pursuing officers.

 

A Flawless Deployment and a Safe End

As the stolen Jeep approached, Captain Sheppard expertly pulled the Stop Stick into its path, successfully flattening one of the vehicle’s tires. Despite the flat, the suspect continued to flee for another three miles. The compromised tire proved to be too much of an obstacle, causing the vehicle to become unstable at high speeds.

The driver and four other individuals bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers quickly apprehended two of the teens, and a short time later, the other three were captured after a brief search.

This successful deployment is a testament to the effectiveness of the Stop Stick in ending a police pursuit. Captain Sheppard’s quick thinking and strategy were efficient and effective, proving that a single tool can reduce a suspect’s ability to flee, manage a pursuit’s speed, and ultimately protect the public from harm.

Excessive Drugs and Guns Found After Coolidge Police End High-Speed Pursuit with Stop Stick®

This month, we’re proud to recognize the quick thinking and tactical precision of Officer C. Calloway and the Coolidge Police Department. Their swift intervention prevented a dangerous high-speed pursuit from escalating, leading to the safe apprehension of a suspect and the recovery of illegal drugs and multiple firearms. We are honored to name Officer Calloway as a runner-up for our Stop Stick® Hit of the Month award.

 

A Quick Response and Coordinated Deployment

On the evening of July 19, an officer on routine patrol in Coolidge, Arizona, clocked a vehicle traveling at an astonishing 87 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. When the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver accelerated and fled, turning the situation into a police pursuit.

As the pursuing officer gave chase, they quickly radioed ahead to report the flight. Fortunately, Officer Calloway was already on patrol in the same area. The pursuing officer and Officer Calloway immediately coordinated a tactical plan to slow and end the chase.

Officer Calloway found himself in the perfect position. The suspect’s escape route led them directly toward his location. He quickly exited his patrol vehicle and deployed a Stop Stick across the road. He then notified the pursuing officer to back off, ensuring a safe distance for the deployment.

 

A Textbook Deployment and a Safe End

Unaware of the tactical plan ahead, the suspect continued to flee at speeds over 90 MPH. They drove directly over the deployed Stop Stick, which successfully flattened both of the vehicle’s rear tires.

Realizing their escape plan was over, the suspect pulled the vehicle over less than a mile after hitting the Stop Stick and surrendered to Coolidge Police without further incident. A search of the vehicle turned up cash, over 4 ounces of marijuana, and more than 99 grams of THC wax. Officers also recovered two firearms, three magazines, and a 50-round drum magazine.

This successful deployment by Officer Calloway is a textbook example of how communication and a quick action plan can safely end a dangerous law enforcement situation. The Stop Stick was an essential tool in putting a direct end to what was an increasingly dangerous high-speed police pursuit, resulting in a safe arrest and the removal of illegal weapons and drugs from the street.
