Police arrested a man in Chaffee County after deputies used Stop Sticks to disable his truck. An Amber Alert had been issued for the truck, which was connected to a child abduction.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued the Amber Alert just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, stating that the child was likely with his noncustodial father, traveling in a gray 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. A short time later, observant citizens of Chaffee County began calling police to report the truck in Poncha Springs. The Thornton Police Department also alerted deputies that a license plate reader had captured the Silverado’s license plate there. Authorities also discovered that an Adams County court had issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest with a $300,000 bond.

Deputies quickly located the suspect and his truck in downtown Poncha Springs. The suspect, later identified as Torres, refused to stop, and a chase began. He fled on Highway 50 through Poncha Springs and then north on Highway 285, reaching speeds over 100 mph at times.

On Highway 285, a Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office deputy successfully deployed Stop Sticks to deflate the truck’s tires. The truck finally came to a stop just south of the 285 and Highway 291 Junction. The Amber Alert was canceled around 4:40 p.m., and deputies captured the suspect.

Police have a Lima man in custody after a high-speed chase that began in Allen County and ended in Auglaize County.

Authorities booked 46-year-old Johnathon Herder into the Allen County Jail on a charge of failure to comply with a police officer. According to the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, the chase started just after 1 a.m. when a deputy tried to pull Herder over on North Baxter Street in Lima for a traffic violation, but Herder fled.

During the chase near the intersection of Metcalf and Robb, the driver intentionally swerved and accelerated at a high rate of speed toward a deputy deploying Stop Sticks. He was not successful in hitting the deputy.

The pursuit continued into the countryside. Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol joined the pursuit and deployed Stop Sticks again on North Defiance Trail. After Herder hit the sticks, he continued into Auglaize County, where the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office also joined the pursuit. He eventually came to a stop in the 14000 block of Moulton–New Knoxville Road. Deputies took him into custody after he initially resisted arrest.

Deputies later found that Herder had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The incident remains under investigation.

FLORESVILLE — A San Antonio man faces multiple charges — including evading arrest with a motor vehicle — after he led officers with multiple agencies on a high-speed chase Sept. 19 from the La Vernia area to Floresville.

According to Deputy Zach Garcia, public information officer with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, the agency was notified Friday evening around 8:30 p.m. by the San Antonio Police Department that they had followed a wanted felon from their jurisdiction; the individual was traveling through northeastern Wilson County in a black 2012 Toyota Camry.

Authorities also advised that the suspect had made threats earlier that day toward a magistrate.

The suspect vehicle was located by Deputy Lorenzo Parra, assisted by La Vernia Police Department officers Manny Perez and B.J. Connolly on U.S. 87 in Sutherland Springs.

Parra attempted to initiate a traffic stop of the vehicle for an equipment violation; however, the driver fled at high speed on down U.S. 87, turning west onto S.H. 97 south of Sutherland Springs and heading toward Floresville.

Members of the La Vernia, Floresville, and San Antonio police departments, along with the the San Antonio Police Department’s Repeat Offender Program and Eagle Units, provided assistance.

Sheriff’s Deputy Rolando Garza, working to safely end the pursuit, deployed “stop sticks” in the 500 block of S.H. 97 near the John Deere dealership. This successfully disabled the suspect’s vehicle, which came to rest in the parking lot of the Wilson County Expo and Community Center, just outside Floresville on S.H. 97.
