November 2025 Hit of the Month: Westport Police End Armed Robbery Pursuit with Tactical Stop Stick® Deployment

Stop Stick® is proud to announce the Westport Police Department (CT) and Cpl. Sabin as the winner of the November 2025 Hit of the Month Award.

This month’s winning deployment highlights how strategic planning and the quick deployment of tire deflation devices can transform a high-speed pursuit into a controlled, safe apprehension. When two armed suspects attempted a brazen getaway after robbing an armored car driver, the tactical intervention by Cpl. Sabin brought the dangerous situation to a swift conclusion.

The Incident: Armed Robbery at Wells Fargo Bank

On November 6, 2025, Westport Dispatch received a priority 911 call reporting an armed robbery in progress at a Wells Fargo Bank. A witness exiting the bank observed two masked individuals in dark clothing holding up an armored truck driver at gunpoint.

The suspects overpowered the driver as he was making a daily cash deposit, taking him to the ground and forcibly stealing his firearm, keys, scanner, and the bank bag. As other witnesses began shouting for help, the suspects dropped the bank bag and fled to their vehicle. In a final act of aggression before leaving the lot, the suspects swerved their vehicle toward a witness in an attempt to strike them.

The Pursuit: High Speeds and Evidence Disposal

Westport officers quickly mobilized, canvassing the area and locating the suspect vehicle as it fled south at high speeds. Despite multiple attempts by officers to initiate a traffic stop, the suspects ignored all signals, weaving through traffic in an effort to elude capture.

As the pursuit intensified, the suspects attempted to “sanitize” their vehicle, throwing stolen items—including the victim’s firearm and keys—out of the windows at various intersections.

Tactical Excellence: The Stop Stick® Intervention

Recognizing the escalating danger of a high-speed pursuit through Westport, Cpl. Sabin took proactive measures. He positioned his cruiser at a strategic intersection ahead of the pursuit’s path.

After notifying pursuing units to increase their following distance to allow for a safe deployment, Cpl. Sabin deployed his sleeved Stop Sticks®. The suspect vehicle struck the devices at high speed, resulting in the successful deflation of all four tires.

The impact was immediate and effective. Rather than a violent crash, the Stop Sticks® allowed for a controlled deflation, forcing the suspects to bring the vehicle to a stop less than a mile from the deployment site.

Outcome: Safe Apprehension and Evidence Recovery

With the vehicle disabled, Westport officers conducted a high-risk stop. One suspect was taken into custody immediately, while the second was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

Following the arrests, officers meticulously retraced the pursuit route, successfully recovering the stolen firearm, scanner, and keys. Both suspects now face several felony charges, including:

• First Degree Robbery
• Theft of a Firearm
• Second Degree Assault with a Firearm

One suspect, who was out on parole at the time of the robbery, was immediately remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

November 2025 Runner-Up: Minnesota State Patrol Stops Attempted Murder Suspect After 100+ MPH Pursuit

When an investigation into a violent shooting escalated into a dangerous high-speed pursuit spanning multiple jurisdictions, Trooper Turbes’ precise deployment of Stop Stick® provided the tactical solution needed to disable the suspect’s vehicle and bring a group of armed individuals into custody.

From Crime Scene to Pursuit: The Investigation

The incident began at 3:30 AM when Shakopee Police responded to a 911 call from a victim who had been shot multiple times at their residence. While initial witness cooperation was limited, detectives quickly identified a known shooter linked to the victim’s former roommate.

Surveillance footage led investigators to a Minneapolis residence, where they observed the suspect transferring bags from a Honda CR-V into a silver Pontiac. As law enforcement moved in to box the vehicle, the suspect showed a total disregard for officer safety, ramming a patrol vehicle to clear an escape path and fleeing the scene.

High-Speed Evasion: Disregard for Public Safety

The pursuit quickly escalated as the suspects reached speeds exceeding 100 MPH. Weaving recklessly through highway traffic, the driver attempted to force law enforcement to abandon the chase. Despite these extreme conditions, surrounding agencies coordinated effectively, utilizing traffic cameras and inter-agency communication to maintain visual contact with the vehicle.

The Turning Point: Trooper Turbes’ Strategic Deployment

Positioned ahead of the fleeing Pontiac, Trooper J. Turbes prepared for a tactical intervention. With the pursuit approaching his location, Trooper Turbes successfully deployed Stop Sticks®.

The deployment was a direct hit. The Stop Stick® technology began a controlled deflation of the suspect’s tires, immediately stripping the vehicle of its ability to maintain high speeds. This forced the suspects to abandon the disabled vehicle and flee on foot—a transition that gave law enforcement the upper hand to establish a perimeter and move in for the capture.

Arrests and Evidence Recovery

With the vehicle pursuit terminated, officers apprehended all suspects involved. A thorough search of the suspects’ flight path and vehicle yielded critical evidence, including:

• The 9mm pistol used in the initial shooting (discarded during the chase).
• An additional handgun located inside the vehicle.
• Large quantities of cash, narcotics, and THC products.

The primary suspect now faces charges for attempted murder and second-degree assault, while his accomplices face various charges related to the flight and the recovered contraband.

Commendation: Ending the Threat

We nominate Trooper Turbes and the Minnesota State Patrol for their exemplary performance under pressure. The suspects involved in this case had already demonstrated a willingness to use lethal force and had intentionally assaulted a police officer with their vehicle.

November 2025 Runner-Up: Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office Ends Dangerous Multi-County Smuggling Pursuit

Stop Stick® is honored to recognize Deputy Quintero and the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office as a Runner-Up for the November 2025 Hit of the Month Award.

Law enforcement professionals understand that a “routine” stolen vehicle recovery can instantly escalate into a life-threatening situation. This was the case in South Texas when a multi-county pursuit involving human smuggling tore through school zones and busy city streets, only to be stopped by the tactical coordination of the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The Incident: A High-Stakes Escape Attempt

The pursuit began in McMullen County when deputies spotted a Dodge truck reported stolen out of Bexar County. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated aggressively.

As the suspect fled toward more populated areas, the danger to the public increased exponentially. During an early attempt by McMullen deputies to utilize a different tire deflation device (Stinger Spike Strip), the suspect intentionally swerved toward the officer. This incident highlighted the suspect’s wanton disregard for law enforcement lives and the necessity for a deployment system that prioritizes officer safety.

Urban Danger: Four School Zones and 100+ MPH

The pursuit moved onto highly trafficked city streets. The suspect ignored all traffic control devices and—most critically—blasted through four different school zones during dismissal hours. With children and parents lining the streets, the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office knew the pursuit had to be terminated immediately before it turned fatal.

The Deployment: Deputy Quintero’s Tactical Coordination

Monitoring the pursuit as it barreled toward his sector, Deputy Quintero identified a strategic “bottleneck” at a busy intersection. Coordinating in real-time with a Texas DPS Trooper, the plan was two-fold:

1. Traffic Control: The DPS Trooper worked to restrict civilian traffic at the intersection to create a buffer.
2. Deployment: Deputy Quintero deployed Stop Sticks® at the point where the suspect would be forced to slow down to navigate the congestion.

The strategy worked. As the suspect was preoccupied with navigating the bottleneck, they failed to see the Stop Sticks®. The device achieved a successful hit, immediately deflating the stolen truck’s front tires.

The Capture: Ending the Smuggling Threat

Although the suspect struck two civilian vehicles and a DPS cruiser at low speed due to the congestion, the tire deflation ensured the truck could no longer flee. After a brief foot pursuit, the driver was apprehended.

The subsequent investigation revealed why the suspect was so desperate to escape:

• The vehicle was being used for human smuggling, with four undocumented immigrants found inside.
• The suspect now faces multiple felony counts, including Evading Arrest with a Vehicle and Smuggling of Persons.

November 2025 Runner-Up: Strategic Multi-Agency Collaboration Stops Intoxicated Driver in Nevada

Stop Stick® is proud to recognize Trooper Gloeckner of the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) and Deputy Neighbor of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office as our final Runner-Up for the November 2025 Hit of the Month Award.

DUI pursuits are among the most unpredictable and dangerous scenarios a patrol officer can face. This incident highlights how seamless inter-departmental communication and the strategic deployment of Stop Stick® can bring an erratic, high-speed threat to a safe conclusion.

The Incident: An Urgent Threat to Public Safety

The pursuit began on a Friday night when Nevada Highway Patrol troopers observed a vehicle driving erratically. Suspecting the driver was under the influence, troopers attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to yield, accelerating to extreme speeds in a desperate attempt to elude capture.

As the suspect’s speed climbed, so did the danger to the public. With the vehicle swerving across lanes and the driver showing clear signs of severe impairment, the NHP signaled an urgent need for intervention.

Coordination: Creating an Impenetrable Barrier

Recognizing that the pursuit was heading toward Lincoln County, Trooper Gloeckner (NHP) and Deputy Neighbor (Lincoln County SO) synchronized their efforts through dispatch.

Rather than working in isolation, the two officers coordinated a joint deployment. They selected a strategic location that allowed them to set up a “dual-strike” zone. By deploying their Sleeved Stop Sticks® across the entirety of the roadway, they created a tactical gauntlet that eliminated the suspect’s ability to swerve around the devices.

The Deployment: 4-for-4 Success

The suspect, likely blinded by intoxication and the pressure of the pursuit, drove directly over the coordinated deployment. The Stop Sticks® performed exactly as engineered, successfully deflating all four tires.

Deprived of mobility and the ability to maintain high speeds, the vehicle came to a controlled stop shortly after the hit. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident or injury to the public, the officers, or the suspect themselves.

We commend Trooper Gloeckner and Deputy Neighbor for their professional collaboration. By working together to “blanket” the road with Stop Sticks®, they utilized an intervention tactic that was essentially impenetrable.
