Behind the Pursuit: Volusia Sheriff Ends High-Speed Chase After Stop Stick® and PIT Maneuver

Crucial deployment of a Stop Stick® by deputies enabled Sheriff Mike Chitwood to personally intervene and stop a dangerous pursuit.

A high-speed chase on Interstate 95 came to a dramatic conclusion thanks to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement. Indeed, the pursuit was a testament to the effective collaboration between deputies and the sheriff himself, Stop Stick®, and the PIT maneuver.

The pursuit began when Christian Will Ottinot, 24, of Broward County, fled from the Port Orange Police Department. The chase became increasingly dangerous as Ottinot swerved through traffic, ran red lights, and reached speeds of up to 118 mph.

In a critical turning point, a deputy successfully deployed a Stop Stick®. “Stop Sticks, Stop Sticks, Stop Sticks, Stop Sticks hit, Stop Sticks hit,” the radio transmission confirmed.

According to Sheriff Chitwood, this action caused the suspect’s speed to drop to between 95 and 100 mph, a vital step that significantly reduced the risk. With the suspect’s vehicle slowed, Sheriff Chitwood, on his way to an interview, joined the pursuit. He then used a PIT maneuver to immobilize the car, ultimately arresting Ottinot.

Following the arrest, Chitwood said he hoped the video would convince a judge the suspect needed to be off the road, adding, “This is how people get killed.”

Consequently, Ottinot is facing multiple charges, including fleeing from law enforcement, reckless driving, and a “Florida Super Speeder” violation. This is because the new Florida law targets drivers who exceed 100 mph or are going 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit. Ultimately, penalties for this violation include jail time and extraordinary fines.
