Birthday Blues: Stop Sticks Used to End High Speed Pursuit

Birthday Blues: In South Carolina, a man engaged in a high-speed pursuit against the police that ended after the deployment of Stop Sticks.  When caught, his excuse surprised everyone.

The Chase Begins

            In Berkley County, South Carolina, the Sheriff’s Office noticed two vehicles going nearly 100 mph in a 65 zone.  The police began to follow the two and one vehicle instantly pulled over while the other sped up and ignited a chase with the police.  The chase continued, and the driver even performed a U-turn.  He began driving in the opposite direction and kept going.  Finally, the deputies deployed Stop Sticks on the road.  The vehicle hit the sticks and his car came to a stop shortly after.  After that, the driver got out on foot and attempted to flee from the police.  This was unsuccessful for him and he was arrested shortly after.

Aftermath

            The culprit was identified as DeShone Bernard Rivers, a 28-year-old man.  After a probable search cause, deputies found 12 grams of marijuana, and an open bottle of tequila.  They also learned that Rivers was driving with a suspended license.  He is being charged with failure to stop for blue lights, reckless driving, driving under suspension, second offense and unlawful transportation of liquor.  Deputies asked Deshone why he refused to stop earlier.  He replied that “It was his birthday, and he was just trying to get home.”

DeShone Bernard Rivers was a huge threat on the road that day, and thankfully the Berkley County Sheriff’s Office were brave enough to put an end to his chaos.  Driving at speeds as high as Rivers did especially while others are driving the speed limit will get people injured.  With the help of Stop Sticks, now Rivers will be spending his time in prison with the birthday blues.
