A 14-year-old Scottsbluff boy is in custody after leading police on a dangerous, high-speed chase in a stolen car Tuesday, police said in a news release. Officers received a report Tuesday, July 28, that the teen had stolen a silver 2011 Ford Fusion. Police spotted the car shortly after and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped away. Officers initially chose not to pursue because they knew the teen’s identity and due to safety concerns, police said. Police said the teen kept returning to the neighborhood of the person who reported the car stolen. Officers set up a perimeter and tried to stop the car with spike strips. The car was stopped near East 23rd Street and First Avenue after driving over multiple spike strips. The teen surrendered and was taken to a juvenile detention facility, police said.

Roadside assist for a driver who ran out of gas turned into a high-speed sprint, with a Birmingham teenager in a SUV going 120 mph before officers knocked out a tire and stopped him. The 19-year-old Birmingham man in a 2008 Chrysler Aspen was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. They responded to a report of a driver who had run out of fuel and initially helped him out. After the assist, the driver headed south at high speed and kept going when a trooper activated emergency lights. Troopers estimate the Chrysler hit speeds between 115 and 120 mph as the pursuit moved through Ohio, turning a simple fuel stop into a interstate chase. Troopers set up spike strips near mile marker 102. The devices punctured the front-left tire of the Chrysler, and the SUV rolled to a stop in the median.
