The pursuit began when Oak Brook police responded to a burglary call overnight, according to CBS Chicago. Officers tracked the U-Haul van onto Interstate 294, where the driver continued leading police on a chase rather than pulling over. Villa Park police deployed spike strips twice during the pursuit, flattening three of the van’s tires before Oak Brook officers moved in with their new tool. With three tires already deflated, officers closed the road before deploying the Grappler, and the device snagged the van’s rear right wheel at a low rate of speed. The net-based system is designed to attach a high-strength tether to a fleeing vehicle’s rear wheel, rendering it unable to continue down the road, and it brought the U-Haul to a stop shortly after deployment, per the same account.
On August 24, Odessa police arrested Tony Daniel Tucker after he led officers on a dangerous multi-city vehicle pursuit through Texas while carrying drugs and hostages. Officers initially responded to Dixie Boulevard around 10:45 p.m. following reports of a man and woman yelling inside a moving vehicle. When police located Tucker’s 2008 Ford truck near Avenida De Mexico and attempted a routine traffic stop, Tucker sped away instead. He reached dangerous speeds exceeding 90 mph as he fled through the streets of Odessa and into the Crane city limits. Officers eventually deployed spike strips to disable the truck and brought Tucker into custody without further incident. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered methamphetamine inside. Authorities subsequently charged Tucker with two counts of kidnapping, evading arrest with a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, assault causing bodily injury, and reckless driving for his actions during the late-night disturbance.
