Successful Stop Stick Deployment on I-80

In a display of decisive police action, a dangerous high-speed vehicle pursuit concluded early Wednesday morning on Interstate 80, thanks to the tactical deployment of a Stop Stick brand tire deflation device.

Failure to Yield

Around 2:00 a.m., a traffic stop suddenly became a high-stakes chase. Sacramento Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop a speeding driver near Watt Avenue and Don Julio Boulevard. Specifically, the driver committed numerous vehicle code violations. The driver was later identified as 57-year-old Kenneth Earl Steinberger. Instead of stopping, Mr. Steinberger refused to yield and began a high-speed pursuit. In fact, the chase quickly reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour on the freeway.

Deputies therefore recognized the extreme risk from the runaway vehicle. As a result, they coordinated efforts to safely terminate the pursuit. Crucially, a key part of this plan was using a Stop Stick device. Deputies quickly moved ahead of the chase’s path. Then, they deployed the Stop Stick across the road for the suspect vehicle.

The deployment was a complete success. The suspect’s tires ran over the Stop Stick. Consequently, this caused rapid, controlled tire deflation. Mr. Steinberger tried to continue driving. However, the car quickly became disabled. Moreover, the tires shredded and the car ran on its rims, spewing sparks. He lost control of the vehicle. Finally, the car ultimately crashed into the center divider on I-80. This final crash occurred near the I-5 split and the West El Camino Avenue exit.

Consequently, the crash immediately ended the pursuit. Deputies then approached the disabled vehicle and took Mr. Steinberger into custody without further incident. Following his arrest, they booked him into the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he faces charges related to the high-speed pursuit and his initial violations.

Ultimately, this incident clearly shows how effective and crucial tools like the Stop Stick allow law enforcement to bring dangerous pursuits to a safe and prompt conclusion, thereby protecting both the public and the officers involved.
