140 MPH Stolen Car Chase Ends After Stop Sticks are Deployed

On June 18^th, 2024, Stop Stick Ends Chase in Missoula, Montana.   Donald Meyers was arrested after a long and high-speed pursuit with the Missoula Police Department.  The chase reached speeds of 140 mph, but was finished after the deployment of Stop Sticks.

The Chase Begins

            On Tuesday June 18^th, an officer of the Missoula Police Department was having a normal day watching near Scott St. and Cooley St.  Then, he noticed a 2015 Camry that was reported stolen.  The officer stopped the car and began a traffic stop.  The officer told Donald Meyers to turn the vehicle off, and Meyers fled the scene.

A Dangerous Chase

            Meyers sped off during a traffic stop, and he was on the run.  When he first left the officer,  he was estimated to go over 50 mph in a 25 mph zone while failing to use turn signals.  Meyers continued to speed up reaching 140 mph, while running stop lights and nearly crashing into innocent drivers.  For a while, he was swerving and driving very recklessly, almost hitting numerous vehicles.  After maintaining his high speed for a while, Mayers decelerated out of nowhere and came to a complete stop.  A woman was in the passenger seat, who quickly exited the car, and Meyers sped off again continuing the chase.

Help on the Way

  A Missoula County Sherriff’s Office Lieutenant responded to the area that Meyers was coming up on.  He passed through the intersection at speeds of over 100 mph.  The lieutenant deployed Stop Sticks successfully, and the stolen vehicle was hit.  He attempted to keep driving, but eventually, he came to a stop.  Finally, Meyers got out of the vehicle and complied with the police, ending the long and dangerous chase.

Aftermath

Donald Meyers was asked why he stole the vehicle and fled, he said that he stole the car from a friend and he did not want to go back to prison.  Meyers is being charged with felony criminal endangerment, felony theft, and fleeing from an officer.  The stolen 2015 Camry was valued at $10,000.  Donald Meyers’s bond was set at $50,000.

Donald Meyers’s driving was very dangerous.  Driving at speeds as high as he did will almost always cause a serious accident, and injure innocent people.  Luckily the Missoula Police Department and Missoula County Sheriff’s Office handled the issue in an efficient and safe way by ensuring that a Stop Stick ends Chase in Missoula, Montana.
